I am constantly getting emails from clients who tell me that they are eating healthy and STILL not loosing weight. Usually this means one of two things:
1) Their definition of eating healthy is not in fact healthy.
2) They are eating too much of healthy foods.
Here's the deal, in order to loose weight you need to have a calorie deficit, no matter how "healthy" you are eating.
So what is a calorie deficit?
A calorie deficit is a state in which you burn more calories than you consume. For example, if you burn 2,500 calories per day but only eat 2,000, you have created a deficit of 500 calories per day. A calorie deficit forces the body to use non-food sources of energy (typically body fat though the body can also burn muscle tissue for energy) to make up for the shortfall causing weight loss.
Now-- while having a calorie deficit is important, I am not a fan of "calorie counting." For a long time I was a calorie counter. The problem was I was staying within my calories, without any regard for my macro-nutrients. (Carbs, Proteins, Healthy Fats, etc.) I found that most of the time all I ate was carbs (Because let's be real- they taste SO good!) and I wasn't getting the nutrients that my body needed. It really didn't matter what I was putting in my body, so long as at the end of the day I was in my calorie count.
Now let me just say this real quick. Will this method of calorie counting work? YES, but only for a certain amount of time. Eventually your metabolism WILL slow down and become used to the amount of calories you are giving it daily. The danger in this is that once you start eating normal again, your metabolism will be slower and require a lot of work to get it back to where it once was.
That's why I am personally am so excited to have finally found something that works great for me and my body! Portion control is about moderation and being aware of what you’re eating. These containers help you do this. They are color coded (yellow-carbs, green-veggies, blue-healthy fats) and fit exactly a serving. It even came with this handy little book that lays out an eating plan for you and your body.
I also love that you don’t have to eat directly from the containers. You can create delicious meals by tossing all your ingredients into a bowl to make a healthy and filling pasta or salad—just like the one in the picture above! Once you use them at home for a while you’ll have a good idea of how many fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats you should be eating every day. So don't worry- your not stuck eating out of containers for the rest of your life!
